UKERC Energy 2050

Climate change and the vulnerability of energy supplies are two of the biggest threats to our security. Without urgent action, irreversible changes to the climate system are possible. The UK’s loss of energy self-sufficiency coupled with volatile global markets poses new risks.

This event will bring to a close the first five year-phase of the UK Energy Research Centre’s activities, showcasing the findings of an ambitious cross-Centre research project – UKERC Energy 2050.  The results will show how the UK can meet its goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 while dealing with anxieties about energy security.  The project, over two years in the making, has involved a unique whole systems investigation of energy in the UK.  It utilises UKERC’s complete set of interdisciplinary skills covering economics, engineering and the physical, environmental and social sciences, taking full account of technology, lifestyle and environmental dimensions.

The project has focused on a set of critical issues that may help or hinder the creation of a low-carbon, resilient UK energy system. Findings on each of these topics will be presented at the event:

Pathways to a low carbon economy

What are the implications of ever higher levels of ambition in cutting carbon emissions? What difference would early versus late action have in terms of technology choice and policy imperatives?

How to build a resilient UK energy economy

What are the key elements of an energy system that is resilient to shocks? How will we cope if gas supplies are interrupted or international energy prices rocket once again?

Fast-tracking low energy technologies

How could the accelerated development of different low carbon energy technologies affect the future energy mix and the cost of meeting climate change goals?  What are the long-term benefits of investing in research and innovation?

Lifestyle and behaviour change

Would changes to people’s lifestyles and patterns of behaviour help us meet our policy goals? Would people live with less mobility or lower indoor temperatures?

A change of scale?  Prospects for microgeneration

Does energy generation and conversion at the local scale have a role to play?  What are the behavioural, political and practical issues associated with the introduction of decentralised technologies?

Not just climate change: other environmental perspectives

What impacts will changes in the energy system have on the natural environment?  What happens if society says no to new, unfamiliar technologies on the energy system?

UK Energy Research Centre

The UK Energy Research Centre is the focal point for UK research on sustainable energy. It takes an independent, whole-systems approach, drawing on engineering, economics and the physical, environmental and social sciences.

The Centre's role is to promote cohesion within the overall UK energy research effort. It acts as a bridge between the UK energy research community and the wider world, including business, policymakers and the international energy research community and is the centrepiece of the Research Councils Energy Programme
